Introduction

Equations in algebra are statements that involve variables with a sign of equality (=). As the algebraist Al-Khwarizmi presented algebra to the world in his book The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing. In the book, he explained the way to solve the problems using algebra which were earlier solved using only geometrical concepts.

The type of equation varies with the highest power of the variable. The commonly studied equation types are linear and quadratic equations.

Al-Khwarizmi introduced the fundamental operations such as reducing and balancing on algebra. The balancing of equations in algebra is carried out by adding or subtracting the numbers on both sides of the equation. This approach is also called the Systematic Method to solve a linear equation.

He was able to find the general solution of a quadratic equation geometrically and by a method known as Completing Square Method. Each type of equation has its own unique curve when plotted on a graph. The linear equation gives a straight line and quadratic gives a parabolic curve.

A Persian poet and polymath Omar Khayyam worked on cubic equations. He had a significant contribution in finding the solution of the cubic equations.
