Introduction to Statistics & Probability
Statistics is the branch of mathematics that deals with collection, organization, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data. The data processed using techniques of statistics helps in making decisions and predictions.
Probability in mathematics helps in finding out how probable an event is that it will happen. There can be an uncertainty that the event will happen. Such uncertainty can be measured in probability, whether there are 100% or 0% chances for the event to happen.
Statistics and probability topics list
- Data collection, organization, presentation and interpretation
- Basics and calculation of probability
1. Data collection, organization, presentation and interpretation
What is data and how it is collected from the data sources? Collected data is processed and then organised in in tables in a specific sequence. The data filled up in tables can be further analysed using frequency distribution and tally marks. It can be studied in detail and with examples in the chapter Data Collection and Organization.
Other than tables data can also be presented using charts and graphs, some of the related names are pictograph, bar graph, double bar graph, histogram, pie chart an line graph. How to make these graphs and charts from the data and how to interpret the information from the graphs can be learnt in the chapter Data Handling, Presentation and Interpretation.
2. Basics and calculation of probability
What is meant by the terms an outcome, sample space, event and mutually exclusive events used in probability? How to calculate probability using its formula which divides the number of favourable outcomes by the total number of possible outcomes with examples can be found in the chapter Basics And Calculation Of Probability.
