Introduction

The history of mathematics originates from ancient times when the humans of different civilizations in the world started to find solutions of daily life problems to deal with numbers and geometrical shapes. Later with time as the mathematics field evolved, so were the mathematicians and polymaths, who made immense contributions to refine the concepts and endless discoveries.

How to read and write numbers were well researched by Indian, Roman and Arab mathematicians. Hippasus, the Greek philosopher of Pythagoras times, has been credited with the discovery of irrational numbers. Eratosthenes, also a Greek polymath, developed the concept of prime and composite numbers.

Plato, Pythagoras and Euclid have contributed a lot in the field of geometry. Pluto described 3D shapes of the five platonic solids. Pythagoras developed his famous Pythagorean theorem of triangle. Euclid developed his own geometry. Thales of Miletus developed the well known Basic Proportionality theorem of geometry. René Descartes has been credited with his work in the field of coordinate geometry.

Al Khawarizmi has worked on the new branch, algebra, where he introduced variables to find unknown values.

Their names and work are remembered in the world by celebrating a day with math activities and competitions. For example, Pi day, Pythagorean Day, World Math Day and a Women in Mathematics day to celebrate the contributions of women in mathematics.
