Introduction
In the fundamentals of geometry, the point, line, ray, angle and the shapes like circle, triangles and quadrilaterals are studied. It has been in use and keeps on evolving with time from 3000 BC to today's geometry.
The early geometry was used by ancient Babylonia and Indus Valley civilizations around 3000 BC. They used geometry in astronomy by plotting the daily speed and distance travelled by the planet Jupiter. Thales of Miletus used geometry in calculating the height of the Great Pyramid in Egypt.
Pythagoras who was a Greek philosopher and polymath made contributions to geometry with his famous Pythagorean Theorem. Later Euclid made influential contributions which he documented in the book Elements consisting of 13 volumes around 300 BC. The book covers the topics of plane geometry, solid geometry, flat surfaces and conic sections.
Archimedes, the Greek mathematician in the period of 287 BC to 212 BC, worked in Geometry by proving many theorems, some of them are to find area under arc of parabola and area of a spiral.
Aryabhata, an Indian mathematician and astronomer in 476 to 550 CE, made important contributions such as in calculating the accurate value of pi constant (π).
René Descartes, in the 17th century, developed a cartesian coordinate geometry system which is used to locate a point in a two dimensional space.
